A contagious skin infestation caused by a tiny, burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it las eggs, causing an itchy rash and skin irritation.
Intense itching, especially at night, thin irregular burrow tracks make up of tiny blisters or bumps on the skin, skin rashes with red bumps and blisters, and/ or sores caused by scratching. This infestation is highly contagious and if suspected, prompt treatment by a health care professional is necessary to prevent the spread of infestation.
Your provider at Skin Care Specialists will plan a customized treatment plan for you that may include topical medications such as permethrin cream which is applied to the entire body and neck and left on for several hours prior to washing off. Oral medications may also be recommended depending on a case-by-case basis. It is important to also keep in mind that the entire household needs to be evaluated for treatment assessment.
